Spring Hill College students are in the top ranking in the state for their Praxis exam pass rates.

According to PraxisExam.org, Spring Hill College is ranked number two on the list of colleges with the best praxis elementary education pass rates in Alabama. SHC sits at 79 percent just under Birmingham-Southern College at 80 percent.

WKRG News 5, recently visited campus and shared the news with viewers. They interviewed Paige Raney, Ed.D., Chair of Spring Hill’s Division of Education.

“Our faculty team’s commitment and perseverance of our students led to this impressive ranking. We are committed to delivering high-quality educators into the teaching profession,” Raney said.

Raney explained that SHC students have been working to prepare high-quality Student-Teacher Performance Assessment portfolios and the professors are dedicated to helping the students.

“Our faculty’s work in guiding our education majors through an edTPA seminar class and individual mentoring sessions demonstrates the excellence and commitment of our faculty team. This is a great achievement for our Division of Education students and faculty at Spring Hill College,” Raney said.

According to St. Peters University edTPA is a ‘performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs to measure the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from day one in the classroom.’

All elementary education majors in the state of Alabama must obtain a passing score on the Praxis Elementary Education assessment in order to be recommended for a teaching certificate. At Spring Hill, this assessment is completed by all students prior to entering their teaching internship, a capstone experience for education majors.

Michelle Lorio, an elementary education major, said, “Entering the teaching internship is what we all look forward to the most so studying and working hard to pass this test is something I know will pay off.”
