Spring Hill College prides themselves on appearance, but the inconsistency of trash and overflowed trash cans are raising concern to many students and staff.
As you walk around campus you may notice trash cans here and there that are overflowed, which isn’t the best sight to see. On the other hand, there are other trash cans that are completely clean. This raises an issue on the inconsistency of our cleanup.
SGA President, Matt Lash, spoke about his meeting with Kevin Able and stated that, “The trash issue has been primarily centered around the COVID dilemma, as well as the styrofoam boxes because they aren’t compacted as easily. Student affairs is handling it with the Caf and trying to stop the issue, and that is single use containers.” Matt also stated that the possibility of using reusable containers currently being worked.
Commuters are also noticing the highly stacked trash cans. Natalie Williamson, a sophomore, explains her thoughts on this issue by describing, “Coming on campus is something I look forward to and it is hard to enjoy the atmosphere when the trash cans are distracting the environment. I know it is difficult to keep things in check because staff is short, but picking up trash and making sure things are in order should be a main priority to keep the vibes from Spring Hill more welcoming.”
Not only are commuters and staff concerned, but also RA’s have some concern on the campus's trash dilemma. Aaron Foster, a sophomore RA, talked about how the inconsistency can be a bit of a problem by explaining, “It is pretty bad. Students are asked to take the meals back to their dorm rooms to eat; the trash from the boxes should not be left outside in the front of the buildings for days at a time. Most buildings only have 1-2 trash cans outside them anyways, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue to ask maintenance to empty the cans once or twice a day.” He also mentioned that the inconsistency should hopefully get better with time as long as some motions are put into place to make sure cleanup stays smooth.
