A popular concept around Thanksgiving is the celebration of Friendsgiving. Friendsgiving is a popular trend that college students participate in on campus. Friendsgiving is a wonderful opportunity to recognize all the things you are thankful for and a time to appreciate friends.

Many students at Spring Hill College enjoyed a Friendsgiving meal with roommates, teammates and sorority sisters the weekend before the students left for Thanksgiving break. Senior Becca Roth had two Friendsgiving meals this past Sunday, “My favorite part was hanging out with my friends and eating, and it was nice to forget about school and tests even just for a couple of hours.” Roth expressed that cooking is not her strong suit so she brought a cheese and meat platter to her Friendsgiving which she said was a hit.

Many people who participated in Friendsgiving had friends bring dishes to share similar to the first Thanksgiving with the pilgrims and Native Americans in the year 1621. Some students were very creative when bring food dishes to Friendsgiving. McKinney’s on The Hill sushi was brought by junior Melissa Schwartz and pizza puffs were made by sophomore Johanna Meister. Meister is from Germany and will be celebrating her second Thanksgiving and participated in her was first Friendsgiving this past weekend. Schwartz is from New York which makes traveling home for the short holiday break difficult, “Thanksgiving is a holiday you usually celebrate with family, but it is just as important to show how thankful you are for the friends you have in your life as well.”

A dish that was not present at some of the Friendsgiving dinners was the classic dish that 90 percent of Americans households eat on Thanksgiving which is turkey. Cooking a traditional turkey is a long laborious process Schwartz said. She mentioned that her friends did not have the time to cook a turkey but they are looking forward to eating this big bird on Thanksgiving Day. For many decades the classic cooked turkey with stuffing has satisfied many homes in America but with new trends have been inventive for this popular entrée on Thanksgiving Day such as the delicious turducken and the deep fried turkey.

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving with friends or family it is always important to reflect on all the gifts you have received this year and to give thanks for each blessing.
