Many athletes have resorted to individual weight-lifting sessions in the weight room.

With sporting events being shut down until the spring, student-athletes on campus are encouraged to start individual training.

Athletics on campus will not be the same for a while due to COVID-19, but that will not stop athletes from making sure their training stays in top shape.

For many athletes, this shutdown is just a bump in the road, but to all, this is just the beginning of what eventually lies ahead.

Christian Brandt, a junior on the men’s basketball team,  has been playing for the men’s basketball team since his arrival in 2018. He spoke about his experience with individual training by stating, “Training with COVID hasn’t really been a problem individually, but basketball is a team sport, and not being able to play with each other and build chemistry is what hurts the most.” Christian hopes that everything runs smoothly this fall so that he can get back out on the court with his fellow teammates later this year.

Brian Pempel, a Spring Hill College men’s cross country runner, trained hard all summer so that his training would pay off when he returned to school. As a junior, his time is coming to a close and he wants nothing more than to get back out on those courses.

Brain offered some insight on his individual training by saying, “Individual training is going really well right now, I think all the guys are getting their runs in and we are all currently making do with what we have.”

Brian also said that he cannot wait to get back to running with the team because that is what he misses the most.

With sports being put on hold, athletes look forward to the spring with the hopes that they can compete again.

Spring Hill College President, Dr. Joseph Lee, held a press conference last week and touched on what sports will be like in the future. President Lee explained, “Athletics has been the biggest moving target. Sports are a work in progress.”

President Lee said that there has been no final decision as of right now, and hopes that our athletes can get back to doing what they love later this year.
